Participatory science in virtual worlds for implementing an eco-friendly society

Projects

The Global Lab hosts a growing number of projects and applications. Our OpenSim-based projects are hosted on the GlobalLab Grid, which allows you to interactively and immersively experience Intelligent Transport System (ITS) visualization, a game promoting eco-friendly driving, galaxy formation and molecular dynamics.

To connect to our GlobalLab Grid, do the following:
  1. Get necessary client software:
    1. Download Hippo OpenSim Viewer.
    2. Install and start it.
  2. Add the GlobalLab Grid to the viewer:
    1. Click the Grids button.
    2. In the Grids dialog, click Add.
    3. Enter grid.globallabproject.net into the Login URI field and click Get Grid Info. The remaining fields should now be filled automatically.
    4. Click Apply and OK to save the settings.
  3. Sign up for an account:
    1. Back in Hippo OpenSim Viewer’s main window, make sure that the GlobalLab Grid (glgrid) is selected in the Quick Grid Select drop-down menu.
    2. Click Sign up for account. A browser window with the sign up form should open.
    3. Fill out the form and click create.
    4. Close the browser window.
  4. Login:
    1. Enter the name and password chosen in the previous step in Hippo OpenSim Viewer’s main window.
    2. Click Log In. Welcome to GlobalLab Grid!

The projects are located in different areas (regions) of the Grid:

You can quickly move around by clicking the Map button and double-clicking on the desired location in the World Map dialog to teleport there.

This is the complete list of our projects.
Science and Engineering oriented projects:

  • BeGreen: BeGreen is a serious game about driving in a safe and eco-friendly manner.
  • OpenEnergySim: An immersive and collaborative environment for assessing the impact of Intelligent Transport System (ITS) measures on CO2 emission.
  • OpenMol: A collaborative environment for bio-molecular modeling and molecular dynamics.
  • OpenBSLab: A virtual Bio-safety Lab (BSL) as an immersive training environment for health workers.
  • Zebrafish: A project in developmental biology.
  • Mobile Social Networks: MSNs are validated in Second Life.
  • OpenAstroSim: Environment with enhanced visualization of astrophysical phenomena in OpenSim.
  • AstroSim: An educational interface for experimenting with computational astrophysics in Second Life.
  • Participatory Agriculture: Sensor data from a field server are represented in the virtual world, and the field server is operated in-world.
  • SensorSim: The simulation of a RFID sensor based system is visualized, and its configuration can be changed interactively by avatars.
Avatar oriented applications:

  • EmoHeart: An application that automatically recognizes emotion from Instant Messages and displays emotions graphically in Second Life
  • AuGe (Automated Gesture):An application that automatically generates gestures from textual analysis.
