I) Installation/Prerequisites:

  • unzip the downloaded binaries (install java 1.6 and mono, if missing)
  • create two user accounts for SL (choose one female and one male avatar)
  • login with both accounts (you can log into a second account on the same machine by using this command in a terminal: /Applications/Second\ Life.app/Contents/MacOS/Second\ Life -multiple)
  • visit http://slurl.com/secondlife/NIIsland/239/66/24/:
  1. go to the table with the MPML3D auxiliary objects,
  2. click on the blue box to receive the MPML gestures (for both avatars/bots),
  3. click on the transparent box (red one for female, blue one for male)
  4. go to your inventory->Objects right-click the speech box and choose to wear it
  5. finally teleport to your own island/parcel or any other location and set up the position where the bots should give the presentation, set the home position for the bots there and log out

II) Usage:

  • to start the HelloWorld.mpml.xml script in the scripts folder, first replace the First and Lastname and the password indicated in the script with the name and password of your avatar in Second Life
  • go to the command line/terminal and start the executing script
    sh start_mpml.sh HelloWorld.mpml.xml 4000
  • alternatively to the script you can start the backend and frontend individually
    first start the backend by typing
    java -jar backend.jar /scripts/HelloWorld.mpml.xml -port4000

    then you can start the frontend
    (mono) SL_Frontend.exe

  • wait for the bot to log in and receiving the data from the back end, until it says “START PRESENTATION”
  • log into SL with any other account, go near the bot, say/type in “<FemaleFirstName> explain” to start the presentation

Please note that due to the caching of the sound files the first run of the presentation might be out-of-sync, just start it once more.
